The Robin Dress

Since rekindling my sewing journey over the past few weeks, the Cape Robin fabric I printed for pillow cases for Feat. has popped into my head a few times (featured below with our striped knee-highs). I have a few metres left since planning my pillow case run, and I’ve been trying to think about what I could use them for. I really love this print on bedding, but I kept thinking it would look lovely on clothing too… especially this time of year with all the pretty wintery tones out in nature.

Then, I happened upon this incredible free dress tutorial on fabrics-store.com’s blog, ‘The Thread’. It’s a Gathered tie-back dress with three-quarter cuffed sleeves. I fell in love with it straight away and knew this was the dress template I wanted to use with the Cape Robin fabric.

And here is the final result of my Cape Robin Tie-Back dress…

I would really recommend browsing fabrics-store.com for patterns. They have some wonderful free patterns available, and some really affordable options to purchase too. I drew this pattern up from the free template they provided and I added on a few centimeters here and there, because I’m one size up from the size curve they used. Even with my rather improvised grading work (the technique of sizing patterns up or down), the pattern pieces lined up perfectly and provided no trouble in the sewing process.

And if you’ve read this far, I’m letting you in on a little secret!…

I have some whale fabric leftover too, so I’m planning to launch a giveaway on Instagram on Thursday 15 July, where you can stand the chance to win a whale version of this dress, handmade by me! Be sure to set a reminder on your phone to check out my Instagram account on Thursday so you don’t miss out on the opportunity to enter. Below you can see my whale pillow cases to visualize what you stand the chance to win…

Hoping to see you on the giveaway post! Thanks for reading :)
